The clean channel is nowhere as glassy as Fender's but I don't really mind. And if there's one thing this amp excels at, its the classic hard rock crunch - anything from Led Zeppelin to Van Halen to Guns N' Roses and then some. Yes, I am heavily influenced by Edward Van Halen. Usc marshall vs nyu stern. My main guitars are 1986 American Kramer Barettas with slanted Duncan 59's and one volume knob. 2000 camaro cranks but wont start.
Crank the gain up to about 7 or 8 (anything above that makes the amp sound really squashy) and you'll hear what I mean. The 201's strength lies in its Overdrive channel. After all, I didn't buy the 201 for the clean channel - I always use a Boss Chorus with it anyways.
But if hard, classic Rock is your thang, and you don't want the neighbors calling the cops on your ass everytime you hit the standby switch on and hit an open A chord, then this is definitely your amp - sweet and crunchy - even at low volumes. The only way I could get it to sound like "Sad But True" is with a Boss Metal Zone and a Boss Equalizer.
